Fatty Liver

Fatty liver disease, also known as hepatic steatosis, occurs when there is an accumulation of fat in liver cells. This can be caused by various factors, including:

  1. Alcohol Consumption: Alcoholic fatty liver disease results from excessive alcohol intake.

  2. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): This is more common and is associated with factors such as obesity, insulin resistance, high blood sugar, and high levels of fats in the blood.

Symptoms may be absent or nonspecific, but they can include fatigue, abdominal discomfort, and an enlarged liver. Lifestyle modifications are often the first line of treatment and may include:

Weight Loss: Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight can improve or prevent fatty liver disease.

Healthy Diet: Consuming a balanced, low-fat diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is recommended.

Regular Exercise: Physical activity helps with weight management and can improve insulin sensitivity.

Limiting Alcohol Intake: If alcohol is a contributing factor, reducing or eliminating its consumption is crucial.

Medical supervision and regular monitoring are essential, as fatty liver disease can progress to more severe conditions, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and cirrhosis. Individuals with concerns about their liver health should consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and guidance.
